Disabling System Sounds
In their default form the modern Linux systems play all kinds of sounds, as the user logs in, opens applications, or does anything at all. This can lead to problems when trying to run the CornerStone applications that also want to play sounds - the audio card is already taken by some beep or boing that is playing.
The most straightforward solution to the problem is to disable the default system sounds. Below is an example of how to do this with Gnome (aka Ubuntu default desktop). KDE users will find similar sound setup section in their control panels.
